After Europe realized that North America was a new land the search for a way around or through North America intensified. The Rocky Mountains and the sheer size of Canada presented many challenges to these explorers. During this time trade with the First Nations increased and The Hudson’s Bay Company was formed to set up trading posts. By the time the explorers reached British Columbia many forts had been established throughout the rest of what is now Canada.
